Corgi Shedding – Why Do corgis Shed & How to prevent It

Corgi shedding is a process of losing excess hair from your corgi’s body. It’s a natural process. Both Pembroke welsh corgis and Cardigan welsh lose hair during their shedding cycle. However, the frequency and quantity vary for each dog and its environment. Some might shed more than others de[ending on their genes and fluffiness.

In this article, I’ll cover everything you need to know about Shedding in corgis and give you some tips to reduce shedding.

Do corgis Shed?

Yes, the corgi sheds a lot due to its thick, two-layered coat. During peak shedding seasons two times a year, this breed sheds heavily.

Corgis are often considered ‘hypoallergenic’ because they shed less than many other breeds. However, their coat is very thick, and because it is made up of two layers of fur, it sheds all year round.

The corgi can still be considered a heavy shedder even twice yearly during peak shedding season. If you are allergic to dogs or want to avoid allergens, this dog is not the right choice for you.

Why do Corgis Shed?

Corgis can shed due to improper nutrition, allergies, parasites, fear, and hormone imbalances. But the main reason corgis shed is that they have a double coat. A corgi has a wooly undercoat and a long-haired outer coat.

The wooly undercoat protects the long-haired outer coat, which helps protect the corgi’s skin from the elements and keeps it warm.

The long-haired outer coat also keeps the skin clean by protecting against dirt and parasites. Shedding usually happens twice a year, usually in spring and autumn.

Spring shedding is usually light, and autumn shedding is usually heavier. Corgis shed when the season changes because the undercoat is replaced with a thick, dense, water-resistant outer coat during the winter to help keep the corgi warm.

Shedding is natural for corgis and sometimes nature can’t be justifed by our own likings!

How to prevent Shedding in corgis?

Corgis have a habit of shedding constantly, but there are a few easy strategies and things you can use to help them shed less and handle the mess it produces. This article will look at a few methods for keeping Corgis from shedding.

1. Ensure you brush Your Corgi thoroughly

Brushing your dog thoroughly is important to prevent them from shedding. However, there are many other reasons to brush your dog.

For example, a thorough brushing can help to remove loose hair that could eventually cause a skin infection or even a new bald spot. Thorough brushing can help to prevent the growth of mats, tangles, and hairballs.

Another thing you can do is brush your corgi more often. Make sure you brush your corgi’s hair in a way that traps the loose hairs and don’t leave them in your dog’s coat.

2. Give Corgis Hygienic Baths

Corgis are known to shed, but you can prevent their shedding by giving them a regular hygienic bath. As corgis are long-haired dogs, they are susceptible to mats and tangles. Regular hygienic baths can help to prevent these.

When your corgi is dried up, you should use a slicker brush to help to remove mats. If you happen to spot a mat, use a pair of scissors to cut it out.

3. Give Your Corgi A Good Haircut

If your corgi is shedding, there are a few things you can do to prevent it. One thing you can do is get them a good haircut.

Your dog might not like it initially because it’ll be strange and unfamiliar. Take it slowly, and your corgi will eventually get used to it.

4. Make sure Your Corgis eat a healthy diet and take supplements

With all the corgis’ fur, keeping them from shedding all over the house can be hard. To help corgis stay healthy, you need a healthy diet and supplements.

The best way to keep your corgi from shedding is to give them a healthy diet of lean proteins and carbohydrates and to supplement them with a probiotic.

Corgis are prone to yeast and bacterial infections, which can cause a lot of shedding. Make sure you give your corgi a probiotic, a helpful supplement to help your dog fight off infections.

5. Don’t Shave Off Corgis Hair

If your dog is shedding, they need to be groomed – not because they are dirty. If you shave them, it will irritate them and cause them to shed even more. So, whenever possible try to avoid shaving and go for a trim.

The best way to prevent shedding is to brush your dog regularly and to keep their nails trimmed. If you need to bathe your dog, use a moisturizing shampoo to avoid dry skin.

6. Make sure your Corgis get Enough exercise

To prevent shedding, take your corgi out for walks or exercises. Just make sure you don’t leave your corgi outside when it’s raining, as they will take in a lot of moisture.

If they do happen to get wet, make sure that you dry them off and let them hang out in a cool, dry area. If your corgi is shedding, you can do initial grooming with a comb.

Do all corgis shed?

Yes. Both Pembroke Welsh corgis and Cardigan Welsh corgis shed. There is a misconception that all corgis shed the same. This is not true. Some corgis shed more than others, but all corgis to some extent shed.

The most common time for shedding is when a corgi’s coat changes. At this time, the dog will shed hair in large clumps, and the hair will fall out in long strands.

For most dogs, shedding is expected at the beginning of the year when they are shedding their winter coats and getting ready to start the new season with a new coat.

To be clear, the Pembroke Welsh corgi and the Cardigan Welsh corgi are two different breeds. The Pembroke Welsh corgi is a sturdy, agile, and active breed, while the Cardigan Welsh corgi is a smaller, more refined breed often kept as a companion.

Their double coats are the reason they are called double-coated dogs. This coat comprises two layers: a soft, lighter undercoat and a longer, coarser outer coat.

As the name implies, this coat is one of the reasons the corgi sheds so much. The inner coat thickens as the winter months approach to provide more insulation.

Cooler weather causes your dog to lose his energy. Additionally, your dog’s outer coat will grow longer, keeping it cool during summer.

Eventually, cold weather returns to restart the cycle. During winter and summer, corgis shed more, and their regular shedding throughout the year.

Which Corgi breed sheds the most?

Usually, Pembroke Welsh corgis shed more than Cardigan Welsh corgis.

Pembroke welsh corgis have slightly longer hair compared to cardigan welsh corgis. This causes more friction and tension in their fur from their day-to-day activities. It’s also why the Pembroke Welsh corgi sheds more than its smaller, more polished sibling, the Cardigan Welsh corgi.

Plus Pembroke welsh corgi’s hair tends to be longer so they are a bit more visible than cardigan welsh corgi’s hair. Even if Pembroke Welsh corgis shed the same amount of hair as Cardigan Welsh corgis they’ll still give the impression of more shedding.
