Corgi Lifespan Statistics – How Long Do cogis Live?

There was a lot of confusion regarding the lifespan of corgies. So, I decided to do my own research and surveyed 218 Corgi owners who owned a corgi that passed away. The findings of the research were very interesting!!

Although the average lifespan of a Corgi is believed to be 12-15 years. I discovered that a shocking number of corgies live less than 12 years. Almost 50.9% of corgis live less than 12 years to be exact.

It raised some serious questions in my mind and I started digging deeper.

In this article, I’ll go through my findings on corgis lifespan and combine them with my original research.

How long does a corgi live?

An Original survey report of corgi lifespan illustrated on a pie chart with proper label

The below table shows The Survey responses by different age groups:

Age GroupFrequency
0 – 1031
11 – 1280
13 – 1418
14 – 1989

Almost more than half of the survey indicated that corgies lived less than 12 years.

Out of them, 14.2% of corgis lived less than 10 years while 36.7% of corgis had a lifespan of 10-12 years.

The 13-14 years group had the least responses which are 8.3%. But 40.8% of corgies lived more than 14 years.

So, the majority of corgis live less than 12 years and 14 years.

According to Karen C. “I had one called Mimi and she was in a serious car accident with us and we all recovered well. A month after the accident she had trouble getting up. The vet almost put her down but another vet stepped in and told him to stop. It was only a temporary shock. She lived till about 19.”

Key findings of the research:

  • More than 50% of corgis had a lifespan of fewer than 12 years
  • Almost 41% of corgis had a lifespan of over 14 years
  • 14.2% of corgies had a lifespan of fewer than 10 years
  • The highest surveyed corgi lived for 19 years
  • The lowest surveyed corgi lived for 7 years
  • Renal Disease was a common Reason for early death.

Calculations of the survey:

The mean age of the surveyed corgies was 12.7821 years.

The median age group lies in the 10.5-12.5 years

= value of 109th observation

From the column of cumulative frequency cf, we find that the 109th observation lies in classes 1112.

The median Age group is 10.512.5.

What Are The Cause Of Death In Corgi?

An illustration of common causes of death in corgi.

Most of the surveyed corgis had a normal death. However, there were a number of other reasons such as disease, poisoning, etc.

The most common diseases were renal disease and authorities.

Out of the unusual death, poison was also a reason. But in most cases it was unintentional.

The signs of renal failure were mostly sudden. Corgi’s whose death was caused by renal disease had an average lifespan of 11-14 years.

According to Kaelynne A., His corgi lived for almost 12 years.

“Sudden onset renal failure 11 years and 363 days.”

And According to Diane P., their corgi passed away only one month short of 14 years.

“Mine passed in September of kidney disease one month short of 14.”

Valarie D. told me her corgi passing away was one of the saddest parts of her life.

“Our first corgi died at a little over 12 years old. Her kidneys shut down with no warning. It was the saddest day. She was not just a dog but our furbaby. We now have another one that is 7 and my daughter has one that is 3.”

There were also Two cases reported in the survey where they were poisoned!!!

Conclusion

In summary, According to my research and data gathered from 218 corgi owners, corgies typically have a lifespan of 11-15 years.

Among the 218 corgis, 111 lived less than 12 years and 117 lived more than 12 years.

The research was done via a pole created on a public corgi group “All Things Corgi” with 20,000 Plus members.

The question was Framed like this: “If you had a corgi 🐕 or knew one that passed away, 😢 how long did he/she live?”
